Driver accused of intoxication manslaughter in fatal Downtown El Paso head-on wreck

A 20-year-old driver has been arrested on an intoxication manslaughter charge in connection with a deadly head-on collision Sunday on North Stanton Street in Downtown El Paso, police officials said.

Antonio Roberto Machorro Jr., of Denton, Texas, is accused of speeding down the wrong-way on Stanton Street in a 2014 Chevrolet Camaro when he slammed into a 2012 Dodge Journey, police officials said Tuesday.

The Dodge's driver, Adriana Olivan, 41, of Sunland Park, New Mexico, died at a hospital, police said. Machorro was arrested Sunday after being treated for minor injuries at a hospital.

The collision occurred at 2:40 a.m. when Machorro and two passengers were in the Camaro speeding southbound on the 600 block of North Stanton Street near Missouri Avenue, police said. The passengers were identified by police as Alfredo Vasquez, 39, of the Lower Valley, and Dominik Moreno, 21, of the East Side.

The Camaro struck the northbound Dodge Journey head-on before hitting a parked 2020 Lincoln Continental and a parked 2017 Volkswagen Passat, police said. Metal fencing on a parking garage was knocked down.

Paramedics responding to the crash transported Machorro and Olivan to a hospital, where Olivan later died. Moreno allegedly left the scene, while Vasquez remained, police said.

El Paso County Jail records show Machorro was booked into jail on Sunday and released the next day on a bond of $110,000 ($100,000 surety or cash bond and $10,000 personal recognizance bond).

There have been 11 traffic-related deaths in El Paso this year compared with six at this time last year, according to Police Department figures.
