Dolphins hiring Butch Barry, formerly of Broncos and UM, to coach offensive line
The Dolphins are hiring Butch Barry as offensive line coach — a role that has been filled by five different coaches the past five years — a league source confirmed Wednesday.
Barry was available after being let go by the Denver Broncos when they fired head coach Nathaniel Hackett.

He also served as line coach at the University of Miami in 2019.
During the 2021 season, Barry coached on the staff of the San Francisco 49ers with Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel, so he’s versed in running the wide-zone scheme. Barry was an assistant offensive line coach that season.
The Broncos’ offensive line struggled last year amid a string of injuries, including to left tackle Garett Bolles and center Lloyd Cushenberry, who combined to play just 13 games. The Broncos gave up a league-worst 63 sacks compared to 35 by the Dolphins’ line under Matt Applebaum, who was fired. Quarterback Russell Wilson was criticized at times for holding onto the ball too long.
The Broncos averaged 113.8 rushing yards per game and 4.4 per carry this season compared to 99.2 and 4.3 by Miami.
As an offense, the Broncos were called for 18 holding penalties and 23 false starts. The Dolphins had 11 holding penalties and 18 false starts.
Barry’s unit had better success in San Francisco in 2021, averaging 127.4 rushing yards and allowing 33 sacks.
Barry’s resume includes serving as a senior analyst for the Green Bay Packers in 2020, assistant line coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2015-18) and line coach at Central Michigan (2014).
Barry also played on the offensive line at Central Michigan. He was on the Academic All-Mid-American Conference team as a senior in 2000.
