Devin Futrell to start for Vanderbilt baseball vs. Texas in the College Baseball Showdown

ARLINGTON, Texas — Vanderbilt baseball left-handed pitcher Devin Futrell is starting Sunday against Texas in the final game of the College Baseball Showdown, coach Tim Corbin told The Tennessean.

The program had previously not announced a starting pitcher for the game.

Behind Carter Holton and Hunter Owen, Futrell is the third left-handed pitcher to get a nod in the weekend rotation, a rare occurrence. As a freshman in 2022, Futrell had a 9-3 record with a 3.41 ERA with 64 strikeouts and 13 walks in 63⅓ innings. He started primarily in midweeks for most of the season but moved into the weekend rotation in May. Though he struggled against Tennessee and LSU, he pitched six shutout innings in a win over Oregon State in the Corvallis Regional. He was named to the Freshman All-SEC team.

Vanderbilt (1-1) lost its opener in the tournament against TCU on Friday but beat Oklahoma State on Saturday.

Texas' starter has not officially been announced, but coach David Pierce told reporters earlier in the week that it was likely to be righty Travis Sthele.

First pitch is at 9:30 a.m. CT streamed on FloSports.
