Game notes: Matthew Boyd had a nice bounce-back outing against the Chicago White Sox on June 4, allowing just one run and three hits while striking out nine batters and walking zero.
Boyd has struggled in his first season back with the Tigers, allowing more than five runs on three separate occasions and only having two games with one run allowed. Prior to his productive game with the White Sox, Boyd was beat up by the Texas Rangers, giving up five runs and five hits while also walking four batters.
On the other side, the Tigers will take on Ryne Nelson, who has not been nearly as dominant as Merrill Kelly, who the Tigers couldn't solve Friday.
Nelson has allowed a lot of baserunners in his last two outings, matchups with the Colorado Rockies and Atlanta Braves, giving up 14 hits and seven walks over those two games. He allowed five runs against the Rockies but was still able to squeeze out a win. He took the loss in his most recent outing against the Braves.
In the two outings before facing the Rockies and Braves, Nelson dominated, giving up a total of just four hits and allowing one run.
