Destructive Waterspout Nears Maryland's Smith Island

A waterspout-turned-tornado tore through Smith Island, Maryland, on Thursday, August 4, damaging multiple homes, according to local reports.

Maryland Gov Larry Hogan said that damage-assessment teams were on site and that the state would provide “full resources … to assist with the response.”

This footage shows the waterspout approaching the secluded island, which is home to fewer than 300 people and can only be accessed by boat or helicopter.
