Whenever I feel like my Instagram feed is looking a little blah, I head to @katiesaro's account for fresh, approachable, and soulful design inspiration. As I was scrolling through yesterday, I came across yet another genius design idea from Katie Sarokhanian (she's the artist and shopping enthusiast behind the handle). The hack in question? Draping a vintage rug over a sofa.

"I’ve been waiting for two months for backordered fabric to arrive to reupholster this couch," Sarokhanian writes in her caption. "But in the interim, I draped a vintage Kilim rug over it." The loose layers of textiles bring a little piece of the Bloomsbury aesthetic to her eclectic Dallas home.

Good looks aside, it's also budget friendly and a way to keep your high-traffic sofas clean. "If you’re saving up for reupholstery, perhaps try to find some heavy gorgeous fabric or an old rug while you wait" Sarokhanian suggests. But keep in mind that if you're using fabric instead of a rug, it should be heavy enough to stay put and not constantly slide all over the place. "I’m going to declare this the modern version of plastic-covered sofas" except way cooler, Sarokhanian jokes. And we officially endorse her declaration.

Tossing a rug over the sofa protects the light fabric and gives it more visual interest.

Here, the same sofa has a little shearling throw on the cushions, adding dimension and texture in keeping with the neutral color scheme.
