Cumberland County is waiving pet adoption fees. Here's how you can get a new furry friend.

Cumberland County Animal Services is waiving adoption fees throughout the month of August and will host an event this weekend as part of the nationwide Clear the Shelters campaign.

“At this time of year, our shelter is very full, so we are excited to be able to offer free adoptions throughout the month of August,” Cumberland County Animal Services Director Elaine Smith said in a news release. “Hopefully we will be able to ‘clear’ our shelter and find all of our wonderful dogs and cats, puppies and kittens loving forever homes.”

Here's what you need to know about the Clear the Shelters campaign and this weekend's event.

Clear the Shelters

This is the ninth year Animal Services has partnered with WRAL TV-5 to help find homes for animals at the shelter. Adopted pets receive a rabies vaccination, deworming, flea treatment, combo vaccine, microchip, heartworm test (dogs only) and a spay or neuter operation, the release said.

While pet adoption fees are normally $100 for dogs and $70 for cats with these included services, they will be waived during the month of August.

Since its 2015 inception, the nationwide event has helped more than 860,000 pets find new homes. The 2022 campaign saw a new record of more than 161,000 adoptions, while also raising more than $540,000, the release said.
