Hospital admissions are stabilising in London, but rocketing in Yorkshire, the North East and the Midlands, Michael Gove has said.

Speaking at the Government’s daily press conference Mr Gove said the number of coronavirus hospitalisations fell slightly between April 1 and 2 in London, but soared by 35 per cent in Yorkshire and the North East and 47 per cent in the Midlands.

Seven more NHS Nightingale Hospitals will be built across the UK to treat patients. The new hospitals will be built in:

  • Birmingham

  • Bristol

  • Cardiff

  • Belfast

  • Glasgow

  • Harrogate

  • Manchester

It comes as a five-year-old became the youngest victim to die of coronavirus in England. The child was among 708 people who have died in the UK over the past 24 hours, bringing the total to 4,313.

Meanwhile, Boris Johnson has invited leaders of opposing political parties to attend a briefing with him, the Chief Medical Officer and the Chief Scientific Adviser next week. Sir Keir Starmer, the newly-elected Labour leader, has accepted the offer.
