College Notes: Coffman grad Abby Steiner continues to break track records at Kentucky
Kentucky's Abby Steiner (Dublin Coffman) broke the indoor college track record by .01 when she ran the 200 meters in 22.37 at the Tiger Paw Invitational, and she tied a school record in the 60-meter dash by finishing in 7.12 seconds.
Steiner was also part of Kentucky's 1,600-meter relay team that finished in a school record time of 3:27.27, which is also the fourth fastest time in collegiate history.
Steiner, was a 16-time state champion and record holder in the 60m, 100m and 200m (indoor and outdoor) while at Coffman.
McCrary leads Otterbein to upset win over John Carroll
Katie McCrary scored 12 straight points for Otterbein women's basketball during the fourth quarter of an 57-52 upset win over No. 8 John Carroll. It is John Caroll's only loss of the season.
Not only did McCrary total 18 points in that win, but she also chipped in 19 points, six rebounds and five assists in a 73-67 come-from-behind victory three days later. Against Heidelberg, she had 9 fourth-quarter points, which helped the Cardinals erase a seven-point deficit.
Minnesota defender suspended after hit on OSU's Treloar
The Big Ten suspended Minnesota defenseman Ben Brinkman one game for upending Ohio State’s Travis Treloar in the final minute of Minnesota’s 5-1 victory on Saturday.
Brinkman used his knee to take out Treloar’s legs while applying a high hit, commonly known as “slew-footing.” He was assessed major penalty and a game-misconduct.

The second-place Golden Gophers (43 points) are battling first-place Michigan (45) and third place Ohio State (43) for Big Ten supremacy.
The 11-ranked Buckeyes travel to No. 2 Michigan Friday and Saturday for a two-game set and can win the conference outright with a series sweep plus one Minnesota loss at Penn State.
OSU hockey well represented in Beijing
Former Buckeye Minttu Tuominen and Team Finland earned a second-consecutive Olympic bronze medal in women’s hockey after a 4-0 victory over Switzerland. Tuominen, one of five current or former OSU women's players in the medal round, finished with two goals and an assist in Beijing.
Switzerland's Andrea Braendli, who is a current member of OSU's roster, stopped 34 of the first 35 shots she faced through two periods. Ultimately, though, she allowed three goals, including two on the power-play. She finished the game with 43 saves and faced more shots than any other goaltender in the women’s field, totaling 242 stops over seven games.
The gold medal match featured USA’s Jincy Dunne against Canada’s Emma Maltais and Natalie Spooner late Wednesday night. Dunne entered the faceoff with three assists. Spooner had three goals and 13 assists and Maltais had one goal with a +5 rating for Canada.
In men’s action, Matt Tomkins made 24 saves, but Canada fell to Sweden 2-0 in a quarterfinal game. Tomkins, a 2017 OSU grad, had made 53 saves over his previous two appearances, both wins over China, 5-0 and 7-2.
Area accomplishments
– Madison Shemwell (Ohio Dominican) batted .714 (10-for-14) with a home run, six RBIs and three stolen bases to help the Panthers begin the softball season 3-1.
– Doniven Jackson (Ashland/Reynoldsburg) recorded the second-best time in track's Great Midwest Conference and eighth-best in Division II this season, running the 60m in 6.75 seconds in the Big Meet at Grand Valley State. He also ran the 200m in 21.39 seconds for the 12th-best DII time this season.
– Denison won its 13th NCAC men’s swimming and diving championship, closing an 80-point deficit over the final three events. Richie Kurlich won the 200 breaststroke, with teammates Elijah Venos, Gavin Jones and Christian Narcelles placing third through fifth. Eric Chimes, Noah Houskeeper and Ethan Bevill took first, second and fourth, respectively, in the 200 butterfly. The Big Red sealed the championship in the 400 free relay with a winning time of 2:56.23
– Ari McPheters (Hartley) and Chase Patton (Delaware) earned All-Ohio Championship titles for Ohio Wesleyan track. McPheters won the women's shot put with a throw of 42 feet 4.75 inches, while Patton won the women's pole vault, clearing 11 feet 9.25 inches.
