Unpacking 'Unpacked': Samsung unveils the Galaxy S23 lineup
At long last, Samsung has put the rumors to rest.
At the tech giant’s "Unpacked" event on Wednesday, Samsung unveiled the next generation of its flagship Galaxy S smartphones: the S23, the S23+ and the S23 Ultra. Samsung also announced upgrades to its premier laptop computer, the Galaxy Book3 Ultra.
Let’s dig in.
S23
If speed’s your thing, the S23 family has it. Each model is equipped with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip, which is reportedly 25 percent faster than the Gen 1.
Storage on the S23, the least expensive model in the lineup, starts at 128GB. There are 256GB and 512GB options, but those capacities come at higher price tags.
When it comes to color, there are four hues for the S23 family: Phantom Black, Botanic Green, Mystic Lilac and Cotton Flower, which is essentially a shade of cream.
Say goodbye to the raised camera island on the back of the phone with a redesigned main camera housing. In a break from its predecessor, the S23’s three cameras protrude individually. The front camera, aka the Selfie camera, has 12MP for all three models.
S23+
The S23+ shares a lot of the same specifications as the S23, but there are a few differences.
The display is slightly larger — 6.6 inches versus the S23’s 6.1-inch face — but both have 1080p resolution.
The S23+ as well as the S23 Ultra supports up to 45W fast wired and wireless charging, while the S23 lags behind at 25W charging.
Storage on the S23+ starts at 256GB, which is an improvement over the S23 base model, and tops out at 512GB.
S23 Ultra
The Ultra is, well, ultra.
The highest-end S23 model features Samsung’s most advanced camera ever for a smartphone. The Ultra has an upgraded 200-megapixel main camera that promises extremely detailed photos. It also supports 8K video at 30 frames per second with a wider angle, all while offering better low-light performance. The other three rear cameras remain unchanged: a 12-megapixel ultrawide, plus a 3x telephoto and a 10x telephoto, both with 10-megapixel cameras.
The Ultra comes standard with 256GB of storage and a 512GB upgrade. There’s even a top-of-the-line 1T option that may come in handy while shooting 8K video.
If the Ultra seems flat, it is, at least in terms of the display. Addressing complaints about the curved edges of its predecessor, Samsung flattened out the 6.8-inch OLED display with sharper edges.
The newest Ultra also comes with the S Pen stylus for quick searches and note-taking on the device.
Galaxy Book3 Ultra
Samsung’s new premium PC features high-performance computing with the latest 13th Gen Intel Core i9 processor, making it the fastest Galaxy Book to date.
The processing unit (NVIDIA RTX GeForce 4070 Laptop GPU) provides studio grade graphics to enhance both creative projects and the gaming experience.
The 3K resolution (2880x1800) shows incredibly fine detail, and the refresh rate offers a smooth viewing experience.
The Galaxy Book3 Ultra will be available in a 16-inch display in the Graphite color.
