The third 'Wonder Woman' movie is reportedly on ice, after star Gal Gadot shared an Instagram post saying she 'can't wait to share her next chapter with you'
The third "Wonder Woman" movie is no longer moving forward, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Director Patty Jenkins' film apparently doesn't fit in with future plans for the DC movie universe.
The news is a sign that new DC film bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran might be eyeing a major overhaul.
The third "Wonder Woman" has reportedly hit a wall.
The movie is "dead in its current incarnation," according to a Hollywood Reporter story published on Wednesday. THR reported that the new heads of DC Studios James Gunn and Peter Safran, along with Warner Bros. bosses Mike De Luca and Pamela Abdy, told director Patty Jenkins that the movie didn't mesh with plans for the new DC universe, after she had turned in a treatment for the film.
The report follows an Instagram post from star Gal Gadot, who shared on Tuesday a photo of herself as Wonder Woman, with a caption that said she "Can't wait to share her next chapter with you."
A Warner Bros. spokesperson did not provide a comment on the record in time for publication. Representatives for Jenkins and Gadot did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
The first "Wonder Woman" in 2017 was a critical and box-office hit, grossing $822 million globally. 2020's sequel, "Wonder Woman 1984," earned just $170 million, but was released amid the coronavirus pandemic and debuted simultaneously in theaters and on the streaming service HBO Max.
The THR report comes amid a swirl of confusion around the future of the DC movies as Gunn and Safran iron out details for the franchise's future.
"Black Adam," starring Dwayne Johnson, was a box-office disappointment, grossing less than $400 million globally off a nearly $200 million budget, before marketing and other expenses.
Henry Cavill returned as Superman in a cameo in the movie, which Johnson pushed for. But future plans for the actor are up in the air, according to THR's report — even though, similar to Gadot, Cavill posted a picture of himself as Superman on Instagram last month, saying that fans' patience "will be rewarded."
Next up for DC is "Shazam!: Fury of the Gods" in March, "The Flash" in June,"Blue Beetle" in August, and "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom" in December 2023.
"The Flash" has its own share of problems, as its star Ezra Miller is facing burglary and petit larceny charges, which they pleaded not guilty to in a Vermont court in October.
Needless to say, Gunn and Safran have their hands full as they plot out DC's next chapter.
Correction: December 9, 2022 — This story has been updated to reflect Miller's pronouns.
