Parachute malfunction sends Florida woman plummeting to her death

A parachute malfunction sent a Florida woman plummeting to her death during a skydive in central New York state on Saturday morning, state troopers said.

New York State Police responded on Saturday just after 9 a.m. “to a report of a fatal skydiving incident in the area of County Highway 34 in the town of Westford,” troopers said in a statement Sunday.

“A preliminary investigation revealed that a Karen Bernard, age 59 of Wildwood, FL jumped out of a plane to skydive when it appears she had a malfunction with her parachute,” police said.

The jump occurred in Otsego, in central New York State, and the investigation is ongoing, police said.
