Biggest news of the event
And Apple's "It's Glowtime" event has officially ended! Here are some of the highlights:
The 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max are officially Apple's biggest smartphones ever.
The Pro models also offer the company's longest battery life and are powered by the powerful A18 Pro chip.
A new Camera Control button on the side of the phones (for all iPhone 16 models) will make it faster and easier to use the camera. Considering how often people use their phone cameras, this a game changer.
Apple Intelligence (Apple's AI) will make it easier to perform a variety of tasks, including interacting with Siri, searching through your vast photo and video libraries to find old images, and more.
Apple Intelligence will also power Visual Intelligence, which lets you take pictures of things and learn more about them.
The Pro models will offer the ability to make vastly more cinematic videos.
The iPhone 16 lineup goes on sale starting on Sept. 20, though pre-orders will be available Sept. 13.
Pricing for the iPhone 16 lineup
Pricing for the basic iPhone 16 models will stay the same as the previous iPhone iteration, starting at $799 for the iPhone 16 and $899 for the iPhone 16 Plus.
The Pro models start at $999 for the iPhone 16 Pro and $1,199 for the iPhone 16 Pro Max.
Videos now more cinematic than ever
The iPhone 16 Pro smartphones come with some new video features, including action mode and dramatic slow-motion effects, making videos look more professional than ever.
Videos can be shot in 4K mode at 120 frames per second, and the phones can capture better audio as well.
Basically, you can now make your own high-quality movies with the 16 Pro phones. In fact, Apple highlighted a recent music video featuring The Weeknd that was shot with the iPhone 16 Pro.
iPhone 16 Pro models get camera updates
The Pro models are getting a new 48MP fusion camera with a quad-pixel sensor that can capture information faster. The ultrawide camera is increasing to 48MP, while both Pro models have a 12MP telephoto lens with 5x zoom.
Users can also now adjust skin tone color and adjust color styles in specific areas instead of the entire image. They can also see real-time previews using the new Camera Control button.
Pro models get the new A18 Pro chip
The iPhone 16 Pro will run the A18 Pro chip, which is faster than the A18. It has a new 3nm design, and a 16-core Neural Engine for increased memory bandwidth. AI features will run faster on the A18 Pro.
iPhone 16 Pro models bigger than ever, longer battery life
The iPhone 16 Pro models will be the biggest ever: 6.3 inches for the iPhone 16 Pro and 6.9 inches for the 16 Pro Max. They'll also have the thinnest borders of any Apple product and will be lighter, as they're made of grade 5 titanium.
The Pro models will come in black titanium, white titanium, natural titanium (a silver color) and a brand new color: desert titanium, which has a bronze-like finish.
The Pro versions also offer the flagship smartphone's longest battery life ever.
More Camera Control features
Camera Control will let you open the camera app with just one click; with a second click, you can take a photo. To take a video, just click and hold.
Press lightly gives users a preview with focus, and users can adjust zoom or the background blur on a portrait shot just by sliding their finger on it.
The new iPhone 16 gets a 48MP main camera and 12MP zoom camera. These two lenses will allow the phones to record spatial video and photos.
New Apple Intelligence and Camera Control features help to sort photos, ask Siri for help
Apple Intelligence, which is coming with an IOS update, will power a new feature called Camera Control, which has a variety of features, including helping users organize their pictures in a brand new way. Users can do a search to find photos and videos within its library using a Google-like search (for example, "Angie does a flip" or "The kids learn to crochet with Aunt Fiona," and Camera Control will dig through your extensive library and surface everything that's relevant.
Camera Control also allows informative features like taking a picture of a dog to identify what breed it is, or taking a picture of a restaurant and instantly getting information such as opening hours and how to make a reservation.
Apple Intelligence will also empower Siri to help with everyday tasks — including how to use features on your iPhone. Siri can now give step-by-step instructions on how to do things on your iPhone (as smartphones get more features, they also get a little more complex).
Apple wants to improve your hearing with AirPods Pro
The new AirPods Pro model promises to help prevent hearing loss. Machine learning reduces loud sound levels, no matter the source. The aim is to protect users' hearing before damage sets in.
The Pro model also offers a hearing test. The short test pings sounds at various levels that the user can identify. Apple believes testing is an important step in taking care of hearing health. All test data will be stored in the health app.
In a first for Apple, the new Pros can also serve as a professional-grade hearing aid. The Pros are adaptive to the user and with machine learning, the Pros are tailored to individuals' hearing needs.
Apple unveils bright new colors for iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus
The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus will debut in ultramarine, teal and pink, as well as white and black. Apple says its new glass-ceramic shield is two times stronger than the glass found in any other smartphone. The display is getting smart as well, with up to 2,000 nits in a sunny environment and down to 1 nit in the dark.
These non-Pro phones are getting a customizable Action Button (where the mute button used to be), allowing users to perform a variety of functions with just a touch, including creating a voice memo, identifying a song and translating a phrase.
Other features including using it to open the calendar or turn on the flashlight.
Additionally, the iPhone 16 has a new camera control on the side of the phone that lets users have instant easy access to the camera with just a click.
New features, two types of AirPods 4
Using machine learning technology and powered by the H2 chip, the standard AirPods 4 have a host of new features, including Voice Isolation to remove the noise around you and the ability to interact with Siri with just a head nod for "yes" and shaking your head for "no."
Apple has also introduced a second, more advanced AirPods 4 model known as AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation. These also offer conversation awareness (so your volume naturally lowers if the Airpods you're talking to someone, and then naturally increases when your conversation is over) and transparency mode, which lets you still hear other sounds when you're listening to the AirPods.
The regular AirPods 4 retail for $129, while AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation are selling for $179.
The Apple Watch Ultra 2 is designed for athletes
The Ultra 2 is built for training and workouts. Essentially a sports watch, the Ultra 2 tracks your time in the pool or out on the hiking trail. The watch comes in a new finish, Satin Black, that is scratch-resistant and durable. The Ultra 2 starts at $799 and is available for pre-order today.
Introducing new sleep apnea feature for Apple Watch Series 10
Apple introduced a major new feature for Watch Series 10: the ability to determine whether a person likely has sleep apnea.
Apple says 80% of people with this condition, in which people repeatedly stop breathing while sleeping, go undiagnosed.
Series 10 will track disturbances in breathing and compile the data every 30 days to analyze and determine if it's consistent with symptoms of sleep apnea symptoms. The company expects clearance from the FDA and other regulators soon.
The Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2 will also offer the sleep apnea feature.
Apple Watch Series 10 gets a larger and brighter display
Apple dove into its "Glowtime" event with the new features of the Apple Watch Series 10. The watch has the largest display to date and is slightly larger than the previous top-of-the-line Ultra models. The wide-angle OLED display is 40% brighter than the last iteration. The Series 10 is also the thinnest model from Apple Watch and comes in three colors: jet black, rose gold and silver. The series starts at $399.
'It's Glowtime' kicks off
And we're off! Apple's event starts with a sharply produced video focusing on real Apple users, including users with disabilities, whose lives have been saved or improved using Apple products.
Then we hand off to Apple CEO Tim Cook.
