AT&T unveils new SplitPay feature to easily split phone bills on shared plans

You can get major discounts on your cell phone bill by sharing a plan with family, friends or roommates. However, that usually means one person — the account owner — is responsible for footing the entire bill and then collecting everyone else’s portion later.

Cue the Venmo/Zelle frenzy. Or worse, weeks of awkwardly asking, “Can you pay me back soon?”

But if you’re on a shared AT&T multi-line plan, then you likely have a better option: SplitPay.

With SplitPay, AT&T can send automatic text messages to each plan member alerting them to their individual portion of the monthly bill — and it’ll even include a secure link for them to pay directly.

AT&T's SplitPay will send text messages to individual phone line users on a group plan informing them of their portion of the monthly bill along with a secure link for them to pay.

This should alleviate a common pain point for the account owner, which could be a parent who wants their adult children to pay their share directly, or the adult child wanting parents to pay for themselves, or the “responsible” one in a friend group tasked with handling the whole bill.

After all, each plan member’s bill can be very different. If one person travels abroad and uses AT&T’s International Day Pass, only their individual line’s bill reflects that. Another phone user may have a higher-data plan or still be paying off a new smartphone. It's definitely not a “let’s just split the bill evenly” situation.

To sign up for SplitPay, account owners can assign a payer for each phone line that they want an individual to pay for (though they don't have to do this for every line).

After that, the selected phone line users will receive the monthly text message reminders. While the account owner is still responsible for the total bill, they’ll be warned before the due date if a fellow plan member still hasn’t paid their share.

SplitPay can also be used with the new AT&T Value Plus VL plan, which costs $25 a month per line for four lines.

There are some limitations for SplitPay, however: It doesn’t work for prepaid plans or for people enrolled in Autopay with a credit card.
