A 13-year-old driver was “the lone survivor” of a deadly crash that killed two other teenagers and a 9-year-old child, authorities in Missouri say.

The four kids were traveling in an “older model vehicle” before the car crashed into a tree early Monday, June 27, according to the Florissant Police Department.

The car “immediately caught fire,” police said, “engulfing the entire vehicle.”

One person — the 13-year-old driver — was taken to a local hospital, police said. Officers who responded to the crash in the northern St. Louis suburb tried to save the three others but were unable to.

A neighbor heard the collision at about 2 a.m., according to KSDK.

“I heard a boom and I thought it was something in my house and maybe my son had done something,” Dwayne Elliot told the TV station. “I got about halfway down the driveway and the car just exploded. It just exploded and I heard a guy saying I think there’s someone in the car.”

A preliminary investigation into the fatal crash found that speed was a contributing factor. The investigation is ongoing.

“This is such a tragedy for everyone involved and we offer our sincere condolences to the families of the victims during this difficult time,” police said.
