SO CLOSE: Copan Lady Hornets compete hard; WCS preview
Despite a new mix of talent and a short list of players, Copan High School’s girls basketball team is off to a competitive start.
The Lady Hornets are 0-2, but both losses have been close — including a 40-37 setback earlier this week at Foyil.
Copan dominated the third period, outscoring Foyil, 16-2. But, the Lady Hornets suited up only six girls and ran a bit short on stamina in the fourth quarter and overtime.
Kylee Cobb and Rylee Vanschuyver topped Copan’s scoring sheet with 10 points each, followed by Elyzabeth Odum, four; Jayden Purdum, three and Zoey Secondine, two.
“I pleased with their effort,” Copan coach Kristy Bryan said about her team. “One fouled out so we had to play with five. We would have liked to have a little pressure on the ball.”
Bryan has eight girls on the roster, but not all of them have been available for each of the first two games. She expects to have everyone ready to go after the Thanksgiving holiday.
Among the challenges for the Lady Hornets is to compensate for the absence of height graduated off last year’s team.
“We’ve got to get back to the basics. … We’ve got to make rue we’re blocking out,” she added. “We have to work hard.”
Copan put together a stronger-than-expected 13-10 record last season and returned a few players off that team.

WCS head girls basketball coach Kendall Huntington is focusing on a season of survival, rather than winning success — and hopefully a little revival.
AS of this interview, Huntington eyed only five players on the roster — including some that had never played basketball.
Her two veterans are Lydia Foster and Jazmin McGuire.
Foster is the most experience. McGuire “is going to have to step up,” Huntington said, adding she’ll probably mostly play forward.
Even though she’s 5-foot-11, Foster is slated to play point guard.
Rounding out the roster are two juniors that have never played on any level and a freshman, Huntington said.
“They’re real coachable,” she said. “They’re good girls. This will be very interesting.”
WCS opens the season Monday at Barnsdall.
