Cleveland Browns training camp updates, day 12: Shelby Harris signed as free agent DT

BEREA — Browns fans will get their last in-person training look at their team for more than a week on Wednesday afternoon.

Sure, there will be Friday's home preseason game against the Washington Commanders. However, that's not quite the same as the free access fans get in camp.

Regardless of which day they do see them, unless they're heading to the southeastern-most tip of Pennsylvania next week, Browns fans won't have a chance for another in-person view until the final four training camp practices Aug. 20 and Aug. 22-24. The team is heading to Philadelphia on Sunday, with a joint practices against the Eagles Monday and Tuesday before a Thursday preseason game.

Wednesday's practice figures to be a dress rehearsal of sorts to prepare for Friday night's exhibition. Don't expect full-contact drill or a very long practice at all.

Regardless of what happens, you can continue to check back here throughout the day for updates on team news and practice reports.

Cleveland Browns sign veteran defensive tackle Shelby Harris

The Browns saw their defensive line depth dwindling due to injuries and inexperience, so they made a move on Wednesday to help that out. A league source has confirmed to the Beacon Journal the team is signing veteran Shelby Harris.

Jordan Schultz of the Schultz Report was the first to report. The one-year deal is expected to be worth up to $5.25 million.

Harris has played for three teams over his previous eight seasons in the NFL: Oakland Raiders, Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks. He played his only season for the Seahawks last year after being sent there by the Broncos as part of the Russell Wilson trade, recording two sacks and five tackles for loss in 15 games.

The seventh-round draft pick the Raiders used in 2014 to take Harris 235th overall was acquired from the Arizona Cardinals in the 2013 trade that sent quarterback Carson Palmer to Arizona. He played two seasons in Oakland for a total of eight games.

Harris was released by the Raiders in May, 2016. He spent that season bouncing around tryouts with the New York Jets and Dallas Cowboys.

The Broncos signed Harris in February, 2017, where he took hold as first a rotational piece on the defensive line before eventually becoming a regular starter. He started 49 of 75 games over five seasons in Denver, recording 21.5 of his 24.5 career sacks.

Jerome Ford 'week-to-week' with hamstring injury

The last time the Browns were on the field, running back Jerome Ford was hobbling off the field with what was later called a hamstring injury. No other official word, though, was given after Monday's practice.

Coach Kevin Stefanski updated Ford's condition before Wednesday's practice, calling him "week-to-week" with his recovery. He wouldn't put a timetable on if that meant he would be back in time for the season opener against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sept. 10.

"I think it's unfair to say yet," Stefanski said. "I mean, I'm hopeful, but I can't go past that. He's truly week to week. He's getting treatment right now."

Jaelon Darden, Matthews Adams, Greg Newsome II among those working to side

There's been a small group of Browns players who have missed practice ever since the team returned to Berea. That group includes cornerback Greg Newsome II (groin), receiver Jaelon Darden (leg), tight end Harrison Bryant (medical condition) and defensive tackle Trysten Hill (finger).

Those four were working out to the side with receiver Marquise Goodwin, who has been on the non-football illness list with blood clots in his legs and lungs since before camp starting, and linebacker Matthew Adams, who's been out since early in the first week of training camp with a calf injury. Safety Tanner McAlister was also working with a trainer.

Cleveland Browns reportedly work out running back Jordan Wilkins

The Browns did bring in running back Jordan Wilkins for a workout, according to a report from KPRC-TV's Aaron Wilson. The former fifth-round pick of the Indianapolis Colts out of Ole Miss has been in the league since 2018.

Wilkins has played 53 of his 54 career game with the Colts, plus one game in 2021 with the Tennessee Titans. He has 1,009 career rushing yards and four touchdowns, along with 41 catches for 262 yards.

'We'll see' is status for offensive lineman Drew Forbes after back injury

The other significant injury from Monday's practice was offensive lineman Drew Forbes, who was carted off the field with what was reported by the team as a back injury.

"We'll see where that is in the next few days," Stefanki said. "But it was a very random kind of unlucky thing that happened there, unfortunately."

Kevin Stefanski not going to fret defensive end depth right now

Defensive ends Alex Wright and Isaiah Thomas successfully underwent surgery on their respective knee injuries on the players' day off on Tuesday. The team said both will be out for some time, but are expected to make a full recovery at some point this season.

The Browns did sign defensive end Chuck Wiley on Monday. Stefanski was asked if any more reinforcements were on the way.

"I think we brought in a defensive end a couple of days ago, [so I] feel comfortable with the group," Stefanski said. "We have, as you guys know, it's constantly evolving as you get through practices and get through games in terms of what you think you may need. So that's something that [GM] Andrew [Berry] and his crew are working through every day.

Ogbo Okoronkwo, James Hudson III let bygones be bygones

The final practice at The Greenbrier at the end of July was punctuated by a brawl between the offense and the defense. The two primary combatants were offensive tackle James Hudson II and defensive end Ogbo Okoronkwo.

Okoronkwo appeared to initially slap Hudson in the helmet before running. Hudson chased him down and appeared to throw a punch.

More than a week later, Okoronkwo was asked about any lingering bad blood between the two.

"Oh, that's my dawg," Okoronkwo said Wednesday. "It was hot out there. We got a little chippy. You know, competition, it brings out the best in all of us. We put it behind us. Yeah, we put it behind us. That's my dawg. We just had lunch together yesterday. All good."
