Clemson QB Cade Klubnik has first pass attempt intercepted vs. Notre Dame
Clemson freshman quarterback Cade Klubnik was intercepted on his first pass attempt after replacing DJ Uiagalelei with 1:20 left in the third quarter of the Tigers’ game at Notre Dame Saturday night.
Clemson trailed 14-0 at the time, but Klubnik's miscue quickly turned into a 21-0 lead for the Fighting Irish.
It marked the second straight game that Uiagalelei had struggled early and been replaced by Klubnik.
Klubnik entered Clemson’s game against Syracuse two weeks ago with 4:44 left in the third quarter and Clemson trailing 21-10. The Tigers rallied for a 27-21 victory.
Uiagalelei, who passed for 439 yards as a freshman in a 47-40 double-overtime loss at Notre Dame, struggled Saturday night. He completed 13-of-19 passes, but his completions covered only 78 yards.
Uiagalelei held onto the ball too long on a few occasions in the opening half, which helped lead to two sacks by the Fighting Irish defense.
Uiagalelei has received multiple votes of confidence in the past two weeks from coach Dabo Swinney and offensive coordinator Brandon Streeter after the junior quarterback struggled two weeks ago against Syracuse.
Against Syracuse, Uiagalelei went 13-of-21 for 138 yards and two interceptions before being replaced by Klubnik.
