Clemson baseball score vs. Charlotte: Live updates from NCAA Tournament regional
CLEMSON – Clemson baseball will attempt to remain alive in its own NCAA Tournament regional on Sunday when the Tigers face Charlotte at noon in an elimination game.
Clemson, the No. 1 seed, lost to No. 2 seed Tennessee in a wild, 14-inning game Saturday night. Clemson pitcher Caden Grice had pitched 8 2/3 innings and was one strike away from a complete-game victory when he was pulled for reliever Ryan Ammons. Tennessee’s Zane Denton then tied the game with a three-run home run, setting the stage for a Vols victory five innings later.
Clemson’s Cam Cannarella, the ACC Freshman of the Year who boasts the teams second-best batting average and had four RBI against Tennessee, was ejected from the game in the 13th inning for “unsportsmanlike conduct” and will not be available to play against Charlotte.
The Tigers used nine pitchers in the loss to Tennessee, so Ty Olenchuk, a junior right-hander, will get his first start of the season against Charlotte. He's 1-0 with a 3.92 ERA in 16 appearances this season.
Clemson (44-18), which had a 17-game winning streak snapped by Tennessee, defeated Lipscomb (36-26) in Friday’s first game of the regional, 12-5, while Tennessee defeated Charlotte (35-27), 8-1. Sunday’s winner between Clemson and Charlotte will advance to play Tennessee (40-19) at 6 p.m. and would have to defeat the Vols twice to advance to a Super Regional.

Ninth inning
Clemson 9th: Olenchuk singles but nothing else for Clemson, whose season ends here. Disappointing weekend punctuated by Saturday's 14-inning loss and a quiet offense today. Only one extra-base hit.
FINAL: Charlotte 3, Clemson 2.
Eighth inning
Charlotte 8th: Rocco Reid in the game to pitch.
After Reid and Willie Weiss load the bases, Ethan Darden comes in and strands the runners. To the 9th, and the Tigers lineup needs to wake up ASAP.
Clemson 8th: Billy Amick's two-out single is the first Tigers hit since the 5th inning. But nothing doing in the Clemson 8th.
Seventh inning
Charlotte 7th: The 49ers' first hit of the game is a Will Butcher home run to center. Clemson 2, Charlotte 2.
Jack Dragum's RBI single with two out gives the 49ers the lead after No. 9 hitter Spencer Nolan reached via error. Charlotte 3, Clemson 2.
Tigers are going to have to change something here. Clemson has not been at its best at the plate, defensively or on the base paths this weekend.
Clemson 7th: Evans motions into the Charlotte dugout while warming up for the inning. He's going to be lifted after a very good outing. Righty Paxton Thompson will pitch.
Clemson's lineup has struck out 12 times. Tigers still lead 2-1.
Sixth inning
Charlotte 6th: 1-2-3 inning for Hughes.
Clemson 6th: Tigers lineup lacking discipline against Donye Evans, who has allowed 2 hits and no runs in 4 innings. 8 strikeouts. Lots of chasing and poor swings.
Fifth inning
Charlotte 5th: Lindley walks the first two Charlotte batters in the 5th, and Rob Hughes will replace him.
Huge sequence to end the 49ers inning. Cam Fisher strikes out with runners on the corners and one out. The Charlotte runner at first tried to steal second base on strike 3, but Fisher is ruled to be interfering with Jacob Jarrell's throw down to second base. Inning over. Clemson still leads 2-1. Tigers need to add to this lead.
Clemson 5th: The Tigers lineup has nothing yet for Donye Evans, who struck out seven in a row before a two-out Will Taylor single through the shift. Still 2-1 Clemson. Evans, like Tennessee's Chase Burns last night, is just peppering the outer third with sliders.
Fourth inning
Charlotte 4th: Lindley has retired five in a row. The Tigers could use some length from him today.
Clemson 4th: Donye Evans strikes out the side.
Third inning
Charlotte 3rd: Olenchuk is out of the game as a pitcher after starting the third with a walk and a HBP.
A Cam Fisher RBI sac fly is all Jackson Lindley allows from a bases loaded, no out situation. Clemson 2, Charlotte 1.
Clemson 3rd: Will Taylor singles and steals second, but nothing across in the Tigers' 3rd against new Charlotte pitcher Donye Evans.
Second inning
Charlotte 2nd: 1-2-3 inning for Olenchuk. Looked much more comfortable in that inning.
Clemson 2nd: Riley Bertram singles through the middle, and Blake Wright singles....off the orange stripe at the top of the right field wall.
Charlotte gets a 1-out groundball, but Hansen tries to field it and it bounces awkwardly to second base, and 1B Spencer Nolan drops the putout. Tough break for the 49ers, who could have gotten out of the inning with a double play. Instead, still one out. E3. Clemson 2, Charlotte 0.
First inning
Charlotte 1st: Ty Olenchuk is Clemson's starter today. He walks the first Charlotte batter on four pitches. Olenchuk works around that walk and a HBP to retire the side.
Clemson 1st: Caden Grice hits a line drive home run to right field. The Tigers are on the board early against Charlotte righty Cameron Hansen. Clemson 1, Charlotte 0.
