Cincinnati rookie Elly De La Cruz steals second, third and home in Milwaukee
Cincinnati Reds rookie phenom Elly De La Cruz stole second base, third base and home plate during the same plate appearance in the top of the 7th inning of Saturday's 8-5 win against the Brewers in Milwaukee.
De La Cruz's run gave the Reds a 7-5 lead.
"When you're able to see something that you've never seen before, that's entertainment," Bally Sports Ohio analyst Jeff Brantley said during the broadcast. "That's why you pay to get a ticket. That kid is something we've never seen before."
It was the Reds' first straight steal of home since Brandon Phillips in 2009. De La Cruz is the first Reds player to steal second, third and home in the same inning since Greasy Neale in 1919.
De La Cruz is the only MLB player in the last 50 years to steal second, third and home with the same batter at the plate, per OptaSTATS.
Social media reactions, including from The Enquirer's Gordon Wittenmyer and Charlie Goldsmith:
The last time a Red stole second, third and home in the same inning, dude named Greasy Neale did it in 1919.
Time before that: Dode Paskert in 1910.
Press box wag: "Maybe it's time De La Cruz got a nickname?" https://t.co/yPcVzkdcDu— Gordon Wittenmyer (@GDubMLB) July 8, 2023
Elly De La Cruz can hit 450 foot bombs.
But his biggest strengths are his speed and the way he’s in tune with the game. He made that play on the bases a dozen times in the minors.
He’s as aggressive as it gets and as aware as it gets in those moments.— Charlie Goldsmith (@CharlieG__) July 8, 2023

That’s more than just out-of-this world athleticism. It’s also razor-sharp shrewdness.

Did Elly De La Cruz really just hit a single, steal second, steal third, and then steal home? This is officially ridiculous. pic.twitter.com/AM1dTc3hB5

People around Elly De La Cruz marvel at his baseball IQ and instincts. A straight steal of home almost immediately after swiping third base shows: He’s not all power and speed and arm. He’s got a phenomenal baseball mind, too. pic.twitter.com/ODe4jHi7gX
