Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow's calf strain confirmed, no return date set
Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow was carted off the field during Thursday's practice after suffering a right calf strain, a team source confirmed late Thursday night.
How much time Burrow is expected to miss is uncertain at the moment.
Burrow was scrambling out of the pocket in the second to last period of practice. He pulled up in stride as he rolled to the right and immediately hobbled to the ground. It was a noncontact injury that took place.
After briefly being looked at on the field by the Bengals' medical staff, Burrow was quickly carted off the field.
When Burrow took to the practice fields, he was wearing a black compression sleeve on his right calf – the one he later injured. This was new as he doesn’t typically wear anything of this sort on his legs.
When asked about this specifically, head coach Zac Taylor said, "a lot of guys had some soreness" at practice. It's unclear if Burrow suffered any sort of tweak on the first day of practice that led to him wearing the sleeve and ultimately if it had anything to do with the injury.
When will Joe Burrow return to practice?
As far as the timeline on when he can play again, it depends on the grade of the strain. With a first-degree injury, you can expect to miss anywhere between one to three weeks. Second-degree strains require three to six weeks of recovery time.
The Bengals kick off the season in Cleveland on Sept. 10. Until Burrow or Taylor can confirm when the franchise quarterback will be back, it’s hard to fully guarantee he will be back by the season-opener but it seems likely. Based on the initial reaction though, it appears the Bengals and Burrow dodged a major bullet.
This marks the third consecutive training camp Burrow will miss time due to an injury.
