CIF-SS girls basketball playoffs: Jaquez sets Camarillo record with 54-point game

Gabriela Jaquez continued her record-breaking ways Saturday night. This time she broke her own mark.

The UCLA-bound superstar set a Camarillo single-game record by scoring 54 points in the Scorpions' 85-42 win over visiting Cajon in a CIF-Southern Section Division 1 first-round game.

Jaquez scored 52 points in a 73-72 loss at Bishop Montgomery in a Division 1 second-round game on May 28 during the COVID-shortened spring season. On that night, she became the third Ventura County girls basketball player to score 50 or more points in a single game. The county record is held by Simi Valley’s Cheri Graham, who scored 61 points in a game against Hueneme during the 1980-81 season. Michelle Palmisano scored 50 points for Thousand Oaks in a game during the 1989-90 season.

Jaquez also had 19 rebounds, five assists and three steals in the win for the Scorpions (26-1). Emily Lim finished with 13 points, five assists and three steals, Anika Carey had six points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals, Makenna Phelan had five points and two steals, and Christa Contreras added five points. Camarillo will play at Paloma Valley in a second-round game Wednesday.

Camarillo was one of eight area teams to win playoff openers on Saturday night.

Kristan Yumul finished with 23 points, four rebounds and three assists, Ciara Gallagher had 14 points and 10 assists, Angelina Santana scored 13 points, Mika Jarrett had 10 points, four assists, four rebounds and four steals, and Sam McKenzie added eight points and three steals to lead Oxnard to a 70-67 victory over visiting St. Anthony in a Division 1 first-round game. The Yellowjackets (25-4) will play at Westlake in an all-county matchup on Wednesday.

Mariah Elohim had 20 points, five rebounds and three assists, London Gamble finished with 13 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds, Lindsay Gould had 10 points, three rebounds and two assists, Devin Feiereisen had eight points, three rebounds and three steals, and Alyssa Jackson and Taylor Swanson each scored six points to lead host Westlake (17-6) to a 63-45 victory over visiting Troy to set up a showdown with Oxnard.

Mimi Moon scored 19 points and Myla Scott and Haven Ramirez each had 14 points to lead Pacifica to a 57-47 win over host La Serna in a Division 2AA first-round game. The Tritons (14-10) will host Santa Monica in a second-round game Wednesday.

Khai Anderson-Strawder had 15 points, six rebounds and three blocks, Amia Witt finished with 14 points, nine rebounds, seven steals and two blocks, Erin Topacio had 11 points and six steals, and Lia Hendeleman had 10 points, five rebounds four steals and two blocks to lead Calabasas to a 66-23 win over Santa Clara in a Division 3AA first-round game. The Coyotes (22-6) will play at Cypress in a second-round game Wednesday.

Madison Brothers finished with 13 points and seven rebounds, Omamoke Okah had 12 points and 10 rebounds, Brooklyn Shamblin had 10 points and eight assists, and Lola Donez scored 10 points to lead Oaks Christian to a 65-21 victory over Diamond Bar in a Division 3A first-round game. The top-seeded Lions (21-3) will host Chino in a second-round game Wednesday.

Jocelyn Contreras scored 24 points as Hueneme beat visiting Morningside 44-32 in a Division 4A first-round game. The Vikings will play at Sacred Heart-Los Angeles in a second-round game Wednesday.

Nordhoff defeated visiting Coastal Christian 70-20 in a Division 4A first-round game. The Rangers will play at Aquinas in a second-round game Wednesday.

Eight area teams had their seasons come to an end Saturday.

Ventura lost 45-44 to host Martin Luther King in a Division 1 first-round game. Amaya Fuentes ended her standout career with 21 points and eight rebounds and senior Tiernan Phillips had 12 points and seven rebounds in her final game for the Pacific View League co-champion Cougars (19-8).

Royal lost to host Brea Olinda 58-45 in a Division 2AA first-round game.

Moorpark lost to visiting Bell Gardens 34-31 in a Division 3AA first-round game.

St. Bonaventure lost to host Montclair 39-25 in a Division 3A first-round game.

Foothill Tech lost to Burbank 39-25 in a Division 3A first-round game at Ventura College.

Santa Paula lost to visiting West Ranch 77-57 in a Division 4AA first-round game. Faith Stockton capped her superb career with 27 points and two steals, Arianna Duarte had 11 points, 10 rebounds, three assists and two steals, Danielle Salazar had six points, nine rebounds, two blocks and two steals, and Alexis “Chupies” Carillo added six points and three rebounds for the Citrus Coast League champion Cardinals (16-11).

Thacher lost to host Valley Christian-Santa Maria 44-29 in a Division 5AA first-round game.

Hillcrest Christian of Thousand Oaks lost to host Edgewood 48-17 in a Division 5A first-round game.
