Charlotte dominates Braden River to capture District 2A-11 wrestling duals title

Charlotte looked sharp from the get-go at the District 2A-11 wrestling duals meet hosted at Cape Coral High Tuesday night. Charlotte’s wrestlers combined for a 24-4 record with 19 pins in the duals and beat Braden River 70-9 in the final match.

“Every guy participated, pushed, fought, and that's all you can ask for,” Charlotte coach Evan Robison said.

The reigning 2A state title winners opened the evening against Palmetto, who they took down 72-12, which set up a championship against Braden River.

The Pirates reached the finals by defeating North Fort Myers (59-18) in the first round and Mariner (43-34) in the second round to earn their spot in the championship.

Robinson’s Tarpons got off to a hot start, winning their first four matches against the Pirates to give them a comfortable lead. It wouldn’t be until the 145-pound class where Braden Rivers Dylan Howard picked up the 5-2 victory over Garrett Luce, which was one of the only two wins for the Pirates.

Charlotte’s Gage McCauley gave fans the most exciting matchup of the night, via a huge comeback win at 170. The first-year wrestler and four-year swimmer at Charlotte fell behind 11-4, before successfully turning the tide and pinning Braden Rivers Mario Maltez.

“A lot of guys get behind and they just stop wrestling and he doesn’t,” Robinson said. “Hopefully the other guys see that because it's not over until they raise somebody's hand and that's what they got to realize.”

Following McCauley’s win, the Tarpons would go on to win the final six matchups all via pinfall.

“We've got a little bit of inexperience in the middle there,” Robinson said. “But by the end of the year, I think those guys are going to be very productive. They're really learning fast, so that that should solid up later on down the road.”

Mariner finished in third place with a 39-37 win over Palmetto.
