Celebrate the Palisades turning 50 by sending us your photos

The Palisades are a staple of Sioux Falls. From engagement photos, weddings and birthday parties to hiking, enjoying barbeques and s'mores, we can all agree that the state park makes it easy to get outside.

Now, the Palisades are turning 50 Saturday, according to an announcement on the state park's website.

In celebration of its birthday, the state park will be hosting a poker run and open house from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at 25491 485th Avenue in Garretson. There will also be prizes and a food truck, with a grand prize of a new kayak setup.

Poker Run details

The poker run will have guests visit Balancing Rock Trail, King and Queen Trail and South Wall Trail at the Palisades and Split Rock Creek and Devil's Gulch in Garretson.

Participants can register for the poker run between 8:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. People have until 1 p.m. to turn in their poker sheet at the Palisades Picnic Shelter.

Winners will be announced at 2:00 p.m., according to the website.

FadeAways Food truck will be at the park from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., according to the website. Visitors will also have a chance to learn about the Palisades expansion plan from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. It costs $8 daily to park at the Palisades.

The Palisades tend to have a special place in many people's hearts.

When I first moved here in 2021, the Palisades was one of the first places I visited and I loved it. It was quiet. It reminded me of camping with my parents growing up. It was one of the first places that I got to learn about my new co-workers who quickly became close friends.

I heard stories about how one of our reporters got engaged there while a former editor was married there.
