Canton softball to play for regional title

CANTON — The Canton High School softball team will play for a regional championship on Friday.

The Lady Giants slipped past West Hancock 5-3 on Wednesday to advance to the Canton 2A regional final where they will meet Macomb at 4:30 p.m. at the CHS complex.

Canton, 8-17, would advance to the Athens Sectional with a victory and a game on Tuesday.

The Giants trailed 3-2 entering the sixth inning Wednesday before pinch hitter Alissa Turner doubled to start a 3-run rally.

Pitcher Ashley Groves had entered the game in relief during the fifth inning with the bases loaded and got Canton out of the jam.

She allowed no hits and struck out three to finish the game.

Lexi Knowles went 3-for-4 with 2 RBI for Canton.

•The Canton baseball team dropped its Class 2A Macomb regional opener to Macomb 5-4 on Wednesday.

Macomb pushed across a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to earn a trip to Saturday's championship against Chillicothe IVC.

The Little Giants, who finished the season 7-17-1, were led at the plate by Nick Oldfield's 3-for-3 performance and Jace Weaver's 2-for-3 effort with 2 RBI.'

•Canton's track team finished last in the 17-team Metamora Class 2A Sectional on Wednesday.

Limestone won its first sectional track title in 18 years, its 64 team points edging Morton's 63 and Galesburg's 61.

Top performance for the Little Giants was junior Morgan Caho's fourth place in the 300 hurdles with a personal record run of 42.75 seconds.

Canton junior Noah Buhl finished seventh in the high jump with a personal record 1.77 meter leap and he also took seventh in the pole vault at 2.61m.

Caho also took ninth in the high jump at 1.72.

•Lady Giants' junior Karlee Zumstein will start her bid for a medal in the high jump at the IHSA Girls State Track Meet on Friday.

The meet is held at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.

Zumstein's first place effort at sectional of 1.54 meters ranks 16th among the 27 state qualifiers.

Preliminaries in the Class 2A high jump start at 8 a.m. Friday.

State finals in all classes are on Saturday.
