MIAMI GARDENS — Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has a small fracture on the middle finger of his left (throwing) hand and will not start today's game for the Miami Dolphins against the Houston Texans.

Jacoby Brissett is expected to start in his place.

Tagovailoa had been listed as questionable. He only took a few easy tosses in the brief portion of practice open to reporters Friday.

ESPN, which first reported Tagovailoa's updated status, said there also is a question over whether Tagovailoa will start the Dolphins' next game. That's because it's only four days away, Thursday night, against the Baltimore Ravens.

5 Instant Takeaways: Miami Dolphins smash Houston Texans to snap skid

QB questions: Jacoby Brissett intercepted twice vs. Texans; when will Tua Tagovailoa return for Dolphins?

Hal Habib: Don't call Dolphins' win over Texans ugly. It was much tougher on the eye than that.

Today's news comes in a tumultuous week for him in which the NFL trade deadline passed and the Dolphins had not completed a trade for Houston QB Deshaun Watson, who does not travel with the Texans.

Brissett started three games earlier this season while Tagovailoa dealt with fractured ribs and the Dolphins lost all three. For the season, he is 104 of 159 for 883 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions. Brissett has an 82.9 passer rating. Tagovailoa's rating is 86.0.

The Dolphins and Texans enter this game 1-7 and on seven-game losing streaks.

Deshaun Watson trade talks: Habib: In pursuing Watson, Miami Dolphins failed Tua Tagovailoa. And themselves. Again.

12:35 p.m. | DeVante Parker is on IR. Could the Dolphins bring in Odell Beckham Jr.?

DeVante Parker will miss today's game against the visiting Houston Texans and at least games against Baltimore and the New York Jets because of a hamstring problem that evidently flared up in Wednesday's walk-through.

Since Parker won't be eligible to return until Nov. 28 against Carolina, the Dolphins could look outside the building for help — and it just so happens that a former Pro Bowl receiver is hitting the market.

12:30 p.m. | Laremy Tunsil trade to Texans was supposed to key Dolphins rebuild

In an alternate universe, Laremy Tunsil’s Houston Texans would be traveling to Hard Rock Stadium on Sunday and the storylines would be plentiful.

Tunsil would be facing his former team, the Miami Dolphins, and each rising AFC power would be 7-1 and Deshaun Watson and Tua Tagovailoa would be headlining a nationally-relevant game.

But since the Dolphins traded Tunsil to Houston in a August 31, 2019 blockbuster that was supposed to pay championship dividends for each team, both franchises have spiraled and flopped.

11:30 a.m. | Preston Williams inactive

Receiver Preston Williams, who was left home last weekend for disciplinary reasons, is inactive again today.

This despite DeVante Parker going on injured reserve this week with a hamstring problem.

The Dolphins' receivers today will be Jaylen Waddle, Albert Wilson, Mack Hollins, Kirk Merritt and Isaiah Ford.
