Bottom line: How did the Buckeyes grade out vs. Rutgers? How did OSU's offense grade?

Miyan Williams ran over and around Rutgers, scoring five touchdowns as Ohio State won 49-10 on Saturday. The Buckeyes' defense looked fast and strong. And the two head coaches nearly came to blows after a punter decided to be a ballcarrier.

Happy Homecoming, Greg Schiano!

The late-game fracas added spice to a one-sided affair that saw Williams enjoy being the primary back while TreVeyon Henderson sat out injured.

How did the Buckeyes grade in their win over Rutgers? Leaves are awarded on a zero-to-five basis.

Williams was outstanding, mixing power with his usual helter-skelter juke moves, and he never seemed to tire. He finished with 189 yards on 21 carries, a 9-yard average. He actually outgained Rutgers 94-90 in the first half. His 70-yard score in the third quarter was a nice run, but even better was how tackle Paris Johnson pushed Rutgers linebacker Wesley Bailey 9 yards upfield while Williams cut outside of them and sprinted to the end zone.

Williams' night was needed because quarterback C.J. Stroud was pedestrian by his own lofty standards. He completed 13 of 22 passes for 154 yards, with two touchdowns. But he was off on several throws and struggled somewhat in the red zone, and his interception was thrown into quadruple coverage. Even Rutgers can defend that.

Linebackers Tommy Eichenberg and Steele Chambers are forces in the run game so far this season. On Saturday, Chambers had a game-high 11 tackles and an interception while Eichenberg recorded nine stops. Cornerback Denzel Burke continues to get beat a few times a game and might be someone who better opponents will target.

Defensive end Zach Harrison, while not flourishing as a pass rusher, remains active and forced a fumble and tipped the pass that Chambers intercepted.

Oct 1, 2022; Columbus, Ohio, USA; Rutgers Scarlet Knights wide receiver Aron Cruickshank (1) hits Ohio State Buckeyes punter Jesse Mirco (29) out of bounds on a fake punt run that resulted in a penalty in the fourth quarter of the NCAA Division I football game between the Ohio State Buckeyes and the Rutgers Scarlet Knights at Ohio Stadium. Cruickshank was kicked out of the game for the penalty.

Rutgers' touchdown came after an opening three-and-out was ruined when Emeka Egbuka fumbled the ensuing punt. It put the Buckeyes behind 7-0, which is not a big deal against Rutgers. But such return instability against Penn State might be another story.

Punter Jesse Mirco has been outstanding in dropping balls inside the 10-yard line. His late-game 22-yard scamper through an unsuspecting Rutgers defense, while technically the right thing to do because he is told to run when there are no defenders in sight, was a bit much against an outmanned and defeated team.

Ohio State appeared ready for all of Rutgers' trickery. Rotating quarterbacks, fake kickoffs, wildcat formations ... none of it fooled the Buckeyes.

After a few weeks of clean play, though, the Buckeyes were flagged for six penalties for 41 yards. Two penalties were foolish, with defensive end J.T. Tuimoloau lining up once in the neutral zone and end Caden Curry hitting the quarterback late.

Williams' running and the coaches' fighting were highlights, but the electric Ohio State passing game was off and Rutgers was outmanned in a big way. Even when the Scarlet Knights were ahead 7-0, it would have been hard to find anyone who thought an upset might occur.

A strategy based on tricks and deception can be fun, but not when the wannabe magic makers aren't on the same page. The Knights rotated quarterbacks in excess, including using four different guys on the first six snaps. But there was no mystery that when Noah Vedral was behind center it was going to be a keeper. Indeed, he didn't attempt one pass.

Rutgers looked like it was trying an onside kick in the third quarter, but kicker Jude McAtamney, whose onside attempt in the first quarter failed, didn't quite know what to do and actually ran by the ball without touching it. That brought a flag for offside and caused Schiano to run onto the field to explain things to his kicker. McAtamney then booted the ensuing kickoff out of bounds.

The Knights had 10 penalties for 61 yards, and a few more penalties were declined.

Officiating (4 leaves)

Nothing bad here, and officials were correct to review a close call by Ohio State receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. at the goal line in the first quarter. If the ball had crossed the goal line before Harrison touched out of bounds, it would have been a touchback. There was no conclusive angle, so the ball stayed with the Buckeyes.
