Big Bend Football Power Rankings: A new team and shakeup to the top 10 in week 7 rankings
Can you believe it is week seven of the Big Bend football season already?
What a season it has been so far.
Week six of the season saw a smaller schedule as a handful of teams had a bye week. In the 10 games played, seven Big Bend teams picked up victories in a night filled with high-scoring games.
With the first half of the season over, it's time for Big Bend programs to gear up for the backend of the football season as the dreams of walking on to Ken Riley Field at Bragg Memorial Stadium for the state championships slowly become fantasy or reality for some teams.
Let's take a look at the latest edition of the Big Bend football power rankings!
Week 6 rankings: Midseason football power rankings: A new number one and major shakeups to the top 10
Week seven rankings will run through Oct. 11. Rankings will be updated weekly throughout the regular season, coming out every Wednesday on the Tallahassee Democrat.
1. Lincoln (4-1)
Last week ranking: 1
The Trojans picked up a season-first loss against nationally ranked Colquitt County in week six, falling in South Georgia 56-16 to the Packers. Despite the loss, Lincoln is still one of the Big Bend's top teams and should be competitive the rest of the season. In week seven Lincoln plays Leon at Gene Cox Stadium.
Lincoln has played one of the hardest schedules in the Big Bend and has navigated it well up to this point, utilizing the ground game with running backs Jashawn Washington and Jaden Walden and quarterback Christian Sims giving the Trojans the edge in the rushing attack. The trio has combined for 642 yards and five touchdowns in the first five games of the season for Lincoln.
2. Wakulla (6-0)
Last week ranking: 2
The War Eagles beat Rickards 35-22, remaining undefeated and moving to 6-0 on the season. Arguably the best offense in the area and one of the top in the state, the War Eagles have a number of ways to attack opposing defenses and get points on the board. Hosting St. John Paul II in week seven, Wakulla will look to stay perfect with a home victory.
Wakulla isn't just a high-flying offense, the War Eagles defense has had a great start to the season, recording 443 tackles, 19 sacks and eight interceptions in the opening six games. Allowing 74 points in six games, the War Eagles have held teams under 10 points in three games this season. Juniors Devontae Roberts and Jeremiah Thomas have been standouts for the Wakulla defense so far, with Roberts totaling 41 tackles and two interceptions and Thomas 45 tackles, one interception and two forced fumbles.
3. Florida High (4-1)
Last week ranking: 3
Florida High beat Trinity Catholic 31-28 in week six, getting a late interception from sophomore Gabriel Miley to seal a fourth straight victory for the Seminoles. Since its opening week loss to Ponte Vedra, Florida High has gotten better every week and now faces Carrollwood Day in week seven.
Totaling over 700 yards of total offense in the first six weeks, senior Micahi Danzy has been the driving force for the Seminoles offense, scoring 10 touchdowns between rushing and receiving. On the other side of the ball, Josaiah Broxton and Derrick Mcghee have been a force for Florida High, totaling 110 tackles and forcing two fumbles between the pair.
4. Leon (5-0)
Last week ranking: 4
The Lions remain at four after a bye in week six, and face its toughest opponent of the season so far facing Lincoln in week seven. In Leon's last game in week five against St. John Paul II, the Lions beat the Panthers 30-26 with a last-second touchdown lifting the team to a fifth win and remaining perfect.
Seniors Kamrai Jones and DJ Hepburn have been two of the Lion's biggest contributors, with Jones posting 227 receiving yards and five touchdowns and Hepburn posting 588 total yards between the pass and the run, scoring eight touchdowns. Senior linebacker RJ Bowen has been one of the stars of the Lions defense, totaling 62 tackles, two sacks and one forced fumble this season.
5. Madison County (3-1)
Last week ranking: 7
The Cowboys bounced back from a 35-23 loss to Florida High in week five with a 51-0 victory over Jefferson County in week six. Madison County has an off week ahead of them in week seven and its next game is a big one, facing undefeated Suwannee on Oct. 13.
Madison County has established itself as one of the elite running teams in the Big Bend, with running backs Jason McDaniel and Ryshard Miller leading the Cowboy's ground game, with McDaniel recording 514 yards and five touchdowns and Miller posting 179 yards and three touchdowns. The Cowboy defense has allowed 59 points this season, one of the hardest teams to score on in the Big Bend.
6. North Florida Christian (4-2)
Last week ranking: 6
It was a weird start to the season for North Florida Christian, but after a 46-6 victory over Maclay in week six, the Eagles have won four straight games. Heading into a week seven matchup with FAMU DRS, NFC is looking to keep its hot form going as it looks to prove the first two weeks were just a bump in the road.
Senior quarterback JP Pickles has been elite for the Eagles, posting 1233 passing yards, 16 passing touchdowns, 585 rushing yards and seven rushing touchdowns. Scoring 204 points in the first half of the season, NFC has one of the most explosive offenses in the Big Bend, always able to get a big play.
7. Chiles (2-3)
Last week ranking: 5
The Timberwolves slide up and down the power rankings continue, this time dropping down to seven following a week six 21-14 loss to Mosley. Looking for a bounce-back victory in week seven, Chiles travels to Crestview in search of a third win of the season.
Junior linebacker Bryson Floyd has averaged 13.2 tackles per game, leading one of the hardest-hitting defenses in the state. Forcing quarterback pressure has been a big part of the Timberwolves game plan, and senior linebacker William Sconyers six sacks has led the effort from the Chiles defense to put opposition quarterbacks under pressure.
8. Aucilla Christian (4-0)
Last week ranking: 9
The Warriors keep on handling business, remaining perfect in week six with a 42-8 win over Franklin County. The game against the Seahawks was the first time that Aucilla Christian has allowed any points all season, and the Warriors will look to get back to shutouts with a week seven matchup with Rocky Bayou Christian.
Aucilla Christian has allowed just the eight points scored by Franklin County last week, and the defense has caused four fumbles and grabbed seven interceptions in the opening half of play. Leading the Aucilla Christian offense that has scored 152 points this season is junior Josh Agner, who has totaled 393 yards and four touchdowns on offense this season.
9. Gadsden County (2-3)
Last week ranking: 8
The Jaguars had a hot start to the season and have cooled off a bit since, a 17-0 loss to Tift County in week five right before the bye week put a bit of a damper on things in Havana, but Gadsden County has a chance to bounce back after a bye with a week seven matchup with Jefferson County.
The Jaguars have leaned on senior Ostin Perkins to spark its run game in the first half of the season, allowing freshman quarterback Landon Dougherty time to adjust to the pace of play at the high school level. Dougherty is likely to be a big-time player for the Jaguars, and a second half of the season with Gadsden County balancing the offense between run and pass would be huge for his development.
10. Godby (2-3)
Last week ranking: Unranked
The Cougars snapped a three-game losing streak with a big 43-21 victory over previously undefeated Marianna in week six. Godby will look to carry the momentum forward when it travels to Booker T. Washington in week seven, looking to get the program's record to .500.
Junior runningback Demyric Bentley and sophomore wide receiver Tylan Vickers have been a good one-two punch for the Cougars early in the season as sophomore quarterback Lazarus Chambers adjusts to the starting role. The offense has scored 118 points to start the season, and once things start fully clicking for Godby it will have a dynamic offense.
