James Beard winner to open 1st Arizona restaurant in Scottsdale. What to expect at Uchi
James Beard Award-winning chef Tyson Cole and Hai Hospitality are bringing Austin-based Uchi to Scottsdale.
Slated to open in late 2023 at the corner of North Scottsdale Road and East First Street in Old Town Scottsdale, the restaurant will be designed by Phoenix-based architecture firm AV3 Design, the creative team behind the Vig, Whiskey Row and the Womack, and Hazelbaker Rush design studio in Tucson.
Uchi, Japanese for "home," was named after the very first location of the restaurant, a red refurbished house in Austin where sushi master Cole and his team created magic beginning in 2003.
Since then, Uchi and Cole have won numerous mentions and awards, including the 2011 James Beard Award for Best Chef: Southwest and outposts of Uchi have opened in Houston, Dallas, Denver and Miami.
Scottsdale will be the sixth location of Uchi, the first in Arizona. The 180-person restaurant will include a sushi bar, cocktail bar, dining room and patio. The interior will feature light fixtures and artwork by local artists.

What's on the menu at Uchi
Expect hot and cool tastings such as hot rock wagyu beef and hirame usuzukuri made with thinly sliced flounder, candied quinoa and olive oil. Other sections of the menu will include sushi and sashimi, yasaimono (vegetables), agemono (tempura) and desserts, like a Japanese cheesecake, made with plum sorbet, date marmalade and pumpkin seed granola.
A 10-course chef’s tasting, six-course signature tasting, and nine-course vegetarian tasting will be available omakase-style, which means you leave your experience in the chef's capable hands.
The drink menu will include signature cocktails, hot and cold sake, wine and beer.
