Benjamin uses mercy-rule to claim first state title

ARLINGTON – The Benjamin Mustangs were in a familiar position as huge favorites entering the Class 1A Division II state championship game against Loraine at AT&T Stadium.

It’s a position Benjamin has grown accustomed to this season following a preseason No. 1 ranking. On Wednesday, the Mustangs left no doubt they were the best team in Class 1A DII with a 68-20 thumping of the Bulldogs to secure Benjamin’s first state football championship in program history.

The Mustangs (14-0) earned their 13th mercy-rule victory of the season when Grayson Rigdon found John Wolffarth for a 49-yard touchdown pass with 6:16 left in the third quarter. Loraine (13-2) was the only team Benjamin didn't mercy-rule during the regular season.
