Beacon Journal High School Athletes of the Week featuring six Greater Akron area standouts

Allen pitched a no-hitter with 14 strikeouts and had an RBI on May 9 to lead Ellet to a 6-0 win at home over defending Division II state champion Archbishop Hoban. Allen struck out 18 batters and pitched a two-hit shutout on April 23 in a 2-0 win at home over St. Vincent-St. Mary, and he pitched a shutout with 10 strikeouts and hit a two-run home run on April 13 in a 4-0 win at Firestone. He is 5-0 this season with wins over Canton McKinley, Firestone, STVM, Jackson Gold and Hoban.

Canter hit a two-run walk-off home run in the seventh inning to lead Manchester to a 10-9 win over Tuslaw on May 9, and then hit a home run, a double and a single, had four RBIs, scored three runs and pitched a six-inning complete game with 12 strikeouts in Manchester's 14-3 win over Tuslaw on May 11. Canter pitched a no-hitter with 16 strikeouts, and also hit a single and a double, had four RBIs and scored two runs in a 15-0 victory over Orrville on April 22. Canter entered the weekend with a .462 batting average, a .554 on-base percentage, a .788 slugging percentage, 15 singles, five doubles, four home runs and 51 strikeouts in 33 innings pitched with a 1.48 ERA.

MADISON DIES

Firestone, softball

Dies entered the weekend with an 11-2 pitching record for Firestone (15-3, 7-1 City Series). Since April 25, she has recorded wins over Buchtel, Streetsboro, Ellet, CVCA, Medina, Rocky River Magnificat and Our Lady of the Elms in the circle. A 5-2 win over Ellet on May 2 snapped Ellet's 112-game City Series winning streak. A 5-2 victory over Medina on May 9 and a 3-2 win over Magnificat on May 11 gave Firestone a Division I sectional title and advanced the Falcons to a district semifinal.

Gingras entered the middle of the week with 13 home runs, 39 hits, 42 RBIs, 29 runs, a .549 batting average, a .600 on-base percentage and a 1.282 slugging percentage this season. Gingras smacked two home runs, had five RBIs and scored three runs in Copley's 11-1 win over Norton on May 10 and hit a home run, had four RBIs and scored two runs in a 10-9 victory over Barberton on May 5. Prior to that, she homered and singled, and had two RBIs in a 6-3 win over Revere on April 30 and had two home runs, a single, five RBIs and four runs in a 17-1 victory over Kent Roosevelt on April 29.

Mayer helped the Bulldogs boys team win the Woodridge Wrap-Up on May 7 with a first place finish in the discus with a school-record throw of 164-feet, 9 inches. Mayer broke the previous mark of 162-4, set last year by Woodridge 2021 graduate Angelo Regec, who broke the 1997 mark of 160-9 that was set by Mayer’s father, Aaron Mayer, the Bulldogs current throwing coach.

ANNA RORRER

Woodridge, track and field

Rorrer finished first in three events at the Woodridge Wrap-Up to help the Bulldogs girls team to a second place finish in the standings behind Wadsworth. Rorrer placed first in the 100-meter hurdles in 16.2 seconds, the 300 hurdles in 46.2 and the long jump at 16-feet, 1¾-inches.
