Bally Sports' Day: Only Andrew Abbott is rested after Reds' plane sat on tarmac 8+ hours

Bally Sports Ohio's Jim Day spoke before Monday night's series opener against the Giants and San Francisco about the challenges the Cincinnati Reds getting from Arizona to the Bay Area, and play-by-play announcer John Sadak and analyst Jeff Brantley discussed the situation further during the 1st inning of the broadcast.

Day explained before the game that the Reds' chartered plane encountered mechanical issues that forced the party - except for Andrew Abbott, Cincinnati's starter Monday night - to sit on the plane on the tarmac in Arizona for more than eight hours. The plane departed, according to Day, at about 2:30 a.m. Pacific, and landed after 4 a.m. After retrieving bags and a drive from the airport to the hotel, the travel party didn't get to sleep until around sunrise.

The players didn't want to talk about it on the air, Day added, "because they don't want to look at it as an excuse."

"The Reds had travel woes getting here," Sadak said. "I did not get into my bed until 5:30 in the morning, and I'm assuming it was about the same for everyone else in the travel party."

"I don't think there was any doubt about it," Brantley added.

"Abbott, though, was sent ahead of the team," Sadak said. "He was able to fly on a separate commercial flight and get here to enjoy a little bit more rest."

"Well, they were able to get him off (the Reds' charter)," Day added. "Again, we had mechanical issues. We sat on that plane for over eight hours in Arizona. But they were able to get him escorted via FAA regulations to the game, got him a direct flight. So he was able to get in here at a reasonable hour. He would be the only one that would be quote-unquote rested properly."
