Avantae Burt, De’Andre Church, Poochie Snyder lead GlenOak, Perry, Canton South football, respectively
GlenOak 31, Green 24
PLAIN TWP. — Junior running back Avantae Burt proved to be Mr. Clutch in GlenOak's first Federal League victory of the season Friday night.
Visiting Green (3-3, 1-2) tied the score 24-24 with senior quarterback Robby Klockner's 13-yard touchdown pass to junior wide receiver Anthony Manderine with 8:57 left in the fourth quarter, but Burt fueled GlenOak's game-winning drive in the final two minutes.
On third-and-6, Burt made a one-handed catch for a 24-yard gain on a pass over the middle from junior quarterback Cole Anderson, who went 5-of-17 passing for 52 yards with an interception. Three plays later, Burt broke loose on third-and-1 for a 12-yard TD run with 24 seconds left to play.
Burt finished with 28 carries for 215 yards and three TDs.
“He's a special athlete. He's obviously a guy we want to get the ball to in a lot of different ways,” GlenOak coach Scott Garcia said. “Our guys got it done up front. He ran behind them and got us a win.”
GlenOak (2-4, 1-2) intercepted three of Klockner's passes – one for a defensive touchdown late in the first half and two in the fourth quarter. Junior safety Da'Codis Davis had one of the interceptions with 6:17 left in the fourth quarter, and sophomore linebacker David Potter registered the game-clinching interception with two seconds remaining.
“The defense played outstanding,” Garcia said. “They got us our first score and got it turned around at the end of the first half. It was a great effort.”
Klockner went 22-of-44 passing for 236 yards and three touchdowns with three interceptions.
“Robby's a kid that really doesn't blink a lot, doesn't let things affect him,” Green coach Mark Geis said. “I thought he did a great job throughout the entire game putting things behind him. GlenOak had a really good defensive game plan. I thought he did a great job. I thought he kept bouncing back and making plays.”
GlenOak led 24-17 entering the fourth quarter after Burt rushed for touchdowns of 26 and 80 yards with 8:03 and 4:47 left in the third quarter.
Klockner and sophomore receiver Antonio Martin connected for a 26-yard TD with 5:01 remaining in the third quarter.
GlenOak rallied in the final two minutes of the second quarter to tie the score 10-10 at halftime.
Junior cornerback Nasjier Corner intercepted a pass from Klockner and returned it 80 yards for a touchdown with 1:43 left in the first half. Senior Luc Thompson made the ensuing extra-point kick and then a 32-yard field goal as time expired in the second quarter.
“We're a young football team that's just got to learn to continue to fight and never get comfortable in the game,” Geis said. “In the Federal League, you can't do that.”
Green had built a 10-0 advantage by scoring on the game's opening possession – Klockner threw a 63-yard touchdown pass to junior receiver Jarrett Taylor – and later adding senior kicker Eli Noirot's 22-yard field goal with 9:24 left in the second quarter.
“We played really, really well in that first half, except the last two minutes,” Geis said. “We shot ourselves in the foot with penalties in the red zone twice [and] a turnover. That's on us for not putting that game to 21-0 at halftime.
“After that game, I said [to our players], 'That's on us. That's on our whole team.' We've got nobody to blame but ourselves. We had an opportunity to do it.”
