Augusta deputy arrested for allegedly bringing contraband into prison
The Richmond County Sheriff's Office is investigating one of its own.
Sheriff's Sgt. Caleb Lee reported via news release Wednesday that Deputy Jermaine Rockett had been fired and arrested for allegedly bringing contraband to inmates at the Charles B. Webster Detention Center.
Lee said the sheriff's office was made aware of the allegations on Jan. 9, and after an investigation by the Criminal Investigation Division, Rockett was fired and arrested Wednesday. He is charged with violating his oath of office and items prohibited for possession by inmates.
Rockett was a member of the prison's transportation division. He had been a member of the sheriff's office since September 2021.
