Athletes of the Week: Stuart Cramer, Hunter Huss and Shelby standouts honored
In polling that ended Jan. 30, readers of The Gaston Gazette and The Shelby Star selected the area’s latest batch of Athlete of the Week nominees for the winter sports season.
Each week, area high school coaches can submit scores and standout performances from their team’s previous week of action. If your child’s name — or anyone else from their team — does not appear on the list following a stellar performance, please encourage your coach to email their submissions to jhughes@gastongazette.com.
Boys Hoops Player of the Week
Will Kelly, Stuart Cramer
The Stuart Cramer boys hoops standout received 25.7% of this past week’s vote, enough to edge Jaquis Rumph of South Point, Daris Byers of Forestview and Crest’s Mari Adams for player of the week honors.
During the week of Jan. 17-22, Kelly followed a 17-point outing in a 67-66 win over Forestview with 31 points and nine rebounds in a 73-71 loss to rival South Point.
In his last four games, Kelly is averaging just shy of a double-double with 43.3 points and 9.3 rebounds.
Girls Hoops Player of the Week
Savanni Harris, Hunter Huss
Considered a building block toward future successes at Hunter Huss, Harris was an overwhelming winner in this week’s poll. The Huskie sophomore received 4,046 votes.
Harris followed a 17-point effort in a 72-60 loss to Ashbrook with 11 points in a 59-54 overtime loss to Kings Mountain.
She is averaging 8.5 points, 6.3 rebounds and 5.2 assists this season, keeping Huss in contention for a playoff spot.
