Command Sgt. Maj. Michael Weimer, the senior enlisted advisor for the U.S. Army Special Operations Command, will be the 17th sergeant major of the Army, according to a Dec. 12 announcement from Chief of Staff of the Army Gen. James C. McConville.

“We have the greatest Army in the world because we have the greatest (noncommissioned officer) Corps,” McConville said. “I’m proud to select Command Sgt. Maj. Weimer to lead that Corps.”

Weimer will assume responsibility from current Sgt. Maj. of the Army Michael Grinston in August 2023.

Grinston also previously served at Fort Bragg including being the senior enlisted adviser for the U.S. Army Forces Command from July 2017 to July 2019, before taking on the Army’s top enlisted spot in August 2019.

“Right now, I want to make sure that the soldiers and families at USASOC have what they need to take care of their people and sustain readiness,” Weimer said in a news release.  “I’m not looking ahead, just focusing on the task at hand.”

According to his biography, Weimer joined the Army in 1993 and completed Special Forces Assessment and Selection in 1994.

He completed the Special Forces Weapons Sergeant Course and earned his Green Beret in 1996.

Weimer previously served as the senior enlisted leader at the U.S. Special Operations Command Central at MacDill Air Force Base, Florida from August 2020, until assuming his current role with USASOC in August 2021.
