Will Archie Miller be URI's next men's basketball coach? Here's what we know

Having two Rhode Island teams in the NCAA tournament is not the only college basketball news that local sports fans are watching. While the University of Rhode Island is not part of this year's March Madness, the Rams are in the news for another reason.

Rhode Island fired its coach, David Cox, on March 11, after URI was eliminated from the Atlantic 10 tournament. Since then, there's been a lot of speculation as to who might take over the program.

On Wednesday, ESPN's Pete Thamel reported that URI is targeting former Indiana coach Archie Miller.

IU basketball coach Archie Miller fired: Here's what we know about his abrupt exit

Miller, 43, most recently coached at Indiana (2017-2021), with previous stops at Dayton, as well as assistant stints at Arizona and Ohio State. His Hoosiers finished the 2020-21 season at 12-15 (7-12 in the Big Ten) and lost in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament.

In his four seasons at Indiana, Miller's teams failed to make the NCAA Tournament. At Dayton (2011-2017), Miller's Flyers reached the NCAA Tournament four times and were twice crowned as regular-season champs in the Atlantic 10. Miller led Dayton to the Elite Eight in 2014.

According to indystar.com, Miller earned $550,000 per year in base salary to coach Indiana, plus another $1 million in deferred compensation. He was paid a $10.3 million buyout when he was terminated by the school.

During his four seasons in Kingston, Cox compiled a 64-55 overall record. Rhode Island's loss to Richmond in the A-10 tourney capped the program's second-straight losing season. Cox inherited a program from Dan Hurley that had achieved two straight NCAA Tournament appearances and a combined 51-18 mark in the previous two years.
