9-year-old girl struck and killed while crossing street in Combined Locks
COMBINED LOCKS - A 9-year-old Kimberly girl was struck and killed Friday afternoon in Combined Locks, according to authorities.
The girl, Mackenzie Van Eperen, was crossing South Washington Street at the intersection with Wallace Street shortly after 3 p.m. when she was struck by a bobtail semitractor heading southbound on Washington Street, according to the Wisconsin State Patrol.
The girl was taken to a hospital, where she died, according to Outagamie County Sheriff's Lt. Andrew Raschka.
The driver, Brian Du France, a 59-year-old Kaukauna man, is cooperating with law enforcement. Witness interviews and security camera footage suggest speed was not a factor in the crash, Raschka said. The speed limit for the street is 25 mph.
The intersection was closed for approximately four hours for evidence collection and crash reconstruction, and has since been reopened. The incident remains under investigation.
