The 2023 USFL championship game has its matchup, as the Birmingham Stallions are set to take on the Pittsburgh Maulers for the title.

How did those two teams get here?

Well, the Maulers dispatched the Michigan Panthers in a thrilling game in the first round of the playoffs by a score of 31-27, which required overtime to determine the winner.

The Stallions, who are favored over Pittsburgh in the championship according to Caesars Sportsbook, blew the doors off the New Orleans Breakers by a final score of 47-22 — and that final score doesn’t really do Birmingham justice, as they led 40-7 entering the final quarter.

Skip Holtz’s Stallions will enter the title game as defending champions, having won the 2022 championship after going 9-1 during that regular season (they finished 8-2 this season).

The Maulers, meanwhile, enter as a heavy underdog. They finished with just one win all of last season but have turned their fortunes around by hiring former NFL defensive assistant Ray Horton (and perhaps also by ditching their orange and purple color scheme in favor of traditional Pittsburgh black and yellow coloration). They finished 4-6 after starting the year 2-6.
