WHO TV anchor Calyn Thompson announces breast cancer diagnosis live on 'Today in Iowa'
WHO 13 morning anchor Calyn Thompson is battling breast cancer.
The Norwalk native announced the news during a heartfelt on-air message Wednesday morning on "Today in Iowa" surrounded by co-anchor Justin Surrency and meteorologist Megan Salois. Thompson was diagnosed with the disease last November, she said.
“Six months ago, I did an interview during breast cancer awareness month reminding you to stay up to date on your mammograms, little did I know that interview would foreshadow the beginning of my own journey," she said surrounded by her co-hosts.
Thompson, 28, said the outlook for her cancer is positive and expressed confidence in her path forward.
"My medical team is confident it is treatable and curable, and I am completely confident in my medical team," Thompson continued. "I have completed six chemotherapy treatments, and it feels so good to have that hurdle behind me."

She thanked viewers for helping her through the five-month-long battle and said she could not have gotten through it up to this point without the help of family members, friends, bosses and co-workers.
"There were some mornings I didn’t feel like getting up and going, but you helped me find the strength to get here and deliver the news," she said of WHO viewers. "Coming to work every day has been the sense of normalcy and purpose I’ve needed to get through this medical journey."
Thompson's next step will be surgery later in May. She plans to take a few weeks off to recover and rest.
"I will be back and better than ever!” she ended the announcement.
