Stubborn trailer fire blocks I-405 in Kirkland
A fire that erupted in a semi-truck’s trailer blocked lanes of southbound Interstate 405 in Kirkland for hours on Friday.
The fire started sometime before 10 a.m.
Three lanes were blocked just south of Northeast 85th Street, causing traffic to back up for miles. Two of the three lanes reopened shortly before 1 p.m. Only the ramp and the right lane now remain closed.
Crews from Kirkland Fire responded. A ladder truck first put water on the fire. Later, firefighters carrying hoses climbed ladders they leaned against the trailer to get water closer to the flames, Washington State Department of Transportation traffic cameras showed.
The fire appeared to be out or under control by 11:30 a.m. Heavy equipment was brought in to remove whatever remained in the trailer.
It is not yet known what was inside.
